What to look for
Four things decide whether an app becomes part of bedtime or gets deleted after a week: whether the pictures are good enough that your child wants to look, whether you can try it properly before paying, whether it works on the device you actually use at bedtime, and whether the stories are calm enough to end the day on.
If you want to read together
Nightstory and Bedtimestory.ai are built for a parent reading an illustrated story aloud. Nightstory draws every page and brings characters back from earlier nights; Bedtimestory.ai gives you more control over the prompt and art style.
If you want someone else to read
Gramms is the standout here: a grandparent records a short passage once, and every story is read in their voice. Oscar Stories turns its stories into audiobooks, in ten languages.
If you want a keepsake
Story Spark is a different kind of product: you design one book and it arrives as a printed hardcover. Better as a gift than for every night.
Questions parents ask
- Are AI bedtime stories safe for young children?
- It depends on the app. Look for one where your child never chats with the AI directly and the stories follow fixed rules. Nightstory's have no villains, no fear and always end calmly, and a parent always sees the story first.
- Isn't this comparison biased?
- We make Nightstory, so yes, read it with that in mind. Every fact about the other apps comes from their own websites, checked in September 2026, and where another app does something better we say so.
- How much does Nightstory cost?
- The first story is free with no account, and a free account brings one more. Nightstory Plus is $9 a month or $79 a year, for a new illustrated story every night.
