The Super-Tidy Hero and the Cake That Wouldn't Fit
Nell puts on her superhero cape for a birthday party where the biggest, wobbliest cake in the world has other ideas. A funny, cozy story about tidying up, making room, and one very stubborn cake.
Made on Nightstory, and shared. The child's name has been changed.
The Cake at the Door

Nell pulled on her red boots. She tied her red cape around her neck. "Super-tidy hero, ready to help!" she said. She marched up the sunny porch steps to her friend's birthday party. Balloons bobbed inside the window. Paper hats peeked over the sill. Then Nell stopped. Something was stuck in the little front door. Something huge. Something pink and round and taller than Nell herself. It was the birthday cake — the biggest cake Nell had ever seen — and it would not go through the door. "I can fix that," said Nell. "I am a superhero." She put both hands on the cake. She puffed her cheeks. She pushed. The cake did not budge. Not one inch. The frosting wobbled, just a little, like it was giggling at her. Nell stood up tall. Superheroes do not give up. Superheroes try again. "Stand back, everybody," she said to nobody at all. "I have a plan."
Super-Tidy to the Rescue

Nell bent her knees. She put her hands on the cake. She gave a brave superhero shove. Scoot! The cake slid one teeny bit. Then it bumped the doorframe and left a pink frosting splat right on Nell’s red cape. Nell blinked. “Aha,” she said. “The cake likes decorating.” She tried again, this time sideways. She tipped the cake a little to the left. It wobbled. It swayed. It bonked the other side of the door and made a second pink splat on her cape, round as a button. Nell looked very serious. Very superhero-serious. “Now,” she said, “for the wiggle.” She wiggled the cake up high. She wiggled it down low. She wiggled it like a funny jellyfish. The cake did not fit, but it did add one more pink splat near her shoulder, and that was certainly something. Nell nodded. “This cake is winning the decorating game,” she said. Then she squinted at the doorway, where the little door seemed to be hiding a secret.
The Hinge Discovery

Nell put her nose right up to the little door. There, on the side, was a long shiny hinge. A hinge is a door's bendy elbow. And a bendy elbow can stretch! "Aha!" said Nell. "The door can open wider. But first — super-tidy hero to the rescue!" She tidied the porch. She lined up the boots: big boots, little boots, baby boots, all in a neat row. She stacked the soggy rain hats into a tidy tower. She swept a little pile of leaves all the way to the corner, swish, swish, swish. Now the porch was clear. Nell grabbed the door with both hands and pulled it w-i-d-e open. "Ready, cake?" she said. "One, two... wheeee!" The cake slid through the doorway like a big pink sled. It landed on the party table with a soft, happy plop. "Hooray for Nell!" everybody cheered. Nell took a bow. Her cape was covered in frosting splats, and she didn't mind one bit.
One More Bite and a Yawn

Everybody got a slice of cake. Nell got the biggest slice, with a pink frosting rose on top. She took one big bite. The frosting went right on the tip of her nose. She took another big bite. The frosting stayed on her nose, nice and cozy, like it lived there now. "Nell," said her friend, "you have frosting on your nose." "I know," said Nell. "It's my superhero badge." Then came the balloon game. Everybody bopped a red balloon up, up, up, and nobody let it touch the floor. Nell bopped it high. Nell bopped it low. Nell bopped it right off her own head — bonk — and everybody laughed, and the balloon floated down and landed on her foot. Nell yawned a giant yawn. Her cape felt heavy. Her boots felt sleepy. Her eyes felt like two little doors closing. Her grown-up scooped her up and carried her home, past the quiet houses and the one bright moon. At home, the red cape came off and got folded — fold, fold, fold — neat as a napkin on her chair. Nell snuggled down under her blanket. One small speck of frosting stayed on her cheek, and it stayed all night, like a tiny pink star.
The end.
